Description

Seven miles south of Leakey on FM 1120 stands the tiny settlement of Rio Frio, and the historic live oak tree that has taken the village’s name. The Rio Frio Landmark Oak is one of the largest live oak trees in the state of Texas, and its impressive presence was noted in legal documents when Rio Frio was originally founded and platted. The schoolhouse, and part of the village, was built in the shade it provided. The Rio Frio Landmark Oak is commemorated with a landmark plaque on FM 1120, on the east side of the Rio Frio itself. Though the oak is now on private property, it can be viewed from the road.
